Network Security
Posted by James Dunham on 08 April 2010 01:50 PM
Total networks will be contacting clients over the next 4 weeks to discuss implementing higher security on your firewalls. There is an ever increasing risk to the security of your network because of advances in hacking and software that finds a way into your network. We need to make sure your firewall has the latest updates and that it is secure.

Another area of concern without getting to technical is remote access to your servers. We will be advising anyone who uses remote access to migrate to a VPN Solution which will provide a more secure link from the your PC/Laptop to your server and allow us to reduce the risk of attack.

Time and Attendance Systems

Over the next few weeks Total Networks will be introducing a new product called WaspTime that we will enable business owners to keep track of when their employess are arriving and leaving work. Relying on staff to fill in time sheets or just keeping track of hours worked can be a headache for payroll and also requires a high degree of trust.

WaspTime works with a variety of employee time clocks, allowing you to choose the optimum way to capture employee time. Select from biometric (fingerprint), RFID or barcode clocks. WaspTime clocks feature integrated network (Ethernet) connectivity, eliminating the expense of a dedicated PC that systems with just a USB connection require.

Visit the Misc PDF's in our downlooad section to read more about WaspTime

Why do I need Anti Virus?

Why do I need Anti Virus?

Antivirus software is a key component to keeping your system safe from many threats; such as viruses, malware, spyware and Trojan programs. Computer viruses are most commonly transmitted by downloading a file from the internet, or opening an attachment in an email. These common tasks are performed by the average computer user on a daily basis; hence it is important that everyone has good antivirus protection installed.

Home user may use the many of the free antivirus applications available although Total Networks recommends either AVG or avast! Antivirus programs.

For the small to large businesses a commercial software package is required; Total Networks resells Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Standard/Advanced as an antivirus solution for small to large businesses.

Trend Micro WFBS is a server centric product; which controls updates, scans, licensing etc from a central location, i.e. your server. Agents are installed on all workstations and they communicate back to the server, to receive updates and instructions. The advanced version of WFBS also includes an SMTP (email) scanner, for servers running Microsoft Exchange. This will scan all emails for any spam or infected attachments which pass through your server. Having WFBS operate server side, centralizes your entire antivirus operations and lessens the strain on your workstations.

The importance of backup
Posted by James Dunham on 15 February 2010 12:19 PM

Why is backing up important?

A cyclic data backup system is an integral part of today’s computer networks. Why? Many small businesses operate their computer network with a single centralized server. The server will likely contain company data, staff emails, personal user data, databases and server side software. What would happen should data on the drives becomes corrupt? What if the premises was flooded or affected by fire? Hardware can be replaced. Data cannot; hence backing up ALL company related data is a must for any business.

All servers supplied by Total Networks will commonly include mirrored hard drives. This means that should one drive fail, the server will continue functioning as normal on the secondary drive. A replacement drive can then be installed and mirroring can begin once more. This is good only should one drive fail. This will not protect you from fire, flood, theft or complete server failure. The key is backing up to an external medium such as flash drives, external hard drives or tapes, which can easily be taken offsite. Total Networks can cater to any such backup solution. We also support a range of backup software to suit your needs. Each one is built with different features and range in price.

Total Networks offers backup solutions at three different levels. For information on our backup solutions you can contact us on (03)6231 9166 or via email at info@totalnetworks.com.au
